| Class descriptions Classes at United Yoga Montreal arise from three separate roots of the tree of yoga. First, an inspirational blend of the Iyengar and Astanga Yoga traditions, arising from the lives and teachings of Krishnamacharya (1888-1989), Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009), and B.K.S. Iyengar (1918- ). These classes teach correct anatomical alignment of the classic asanas of Ashtanga Yoga, as well as giving students an experience of the restorative and therapeutic effects of Iyengar Yoga. Props such as blocks, straps, ropes, wall slings, benches and chairs are often used to support, or create space in the students’ bodies. In addition to correcting long-term misalignments, students simultaneously develop strength and flexibility. Second, Kripalu Yoga, inspired by the life and teachings of Swami Kripalvananda (1913-1981) Known as the yoga of compassion, Kripalu Yoga develops a strong healthy body, an open and caring heart, and a peaceful and clear mind. The practice is creative, incorporating lively flowing postures, which emphasizes the wisdom of precise alignment, yogic breathing, mindfulness, compassion and freedom. These qualities allow you to comfortably challenge yourself at your own pace, and leads to a deeper understanding of yourself and your connection to the world around you. Foundations This class provides a safe environment for new students to learn the correct form of the basic yoga postures, which form the foundation of a healthy yoga practice. They include Sun Salutations, standing poses, gentle back-strengthening poses, forward bends, and twists. Short sequences of poses will be chained together to give students an experience of the {flowing} style of yoga. Intermediate Intermediate classes are for students who have attended Beginner classes for at least 4 months, and are ready for a deeper experience. Basic postures will be presented in more challenging ways and with variations. Some advanced postures will be explored and postures may be chained into longer flowing sequences. Deeper Practice Deeper Practice is intended to demonstrate an understanding of the deeper layers and actions of both basic and intermediate postures. Occasionally advanced postures will be taught, but it is not an "Advanced" class in that regard. However, a basic understanding of the standing poses and regular Asana practice is expected before attending this class. Sutra-based In the context of a physically demanding yoga practice, each class allows students to experience the philosophical perspectives of the second chapter (Sadhana Pada) of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, while performing a sequence of yoga asanas designed to open their bodies and minds to the sutras under discussion in that particular class. Abs and Hips Being at the centre of the body, the abdominal muscles and hip joints are involved in every body movement and every yoga position. The first 45 minutes of each class is spent expanding awareness and nervous system engagement in the three layers of the abdominal muscles. The second 45 minutes is spent releasing tightness in the muscles that surround the hip joint, and creating new space within the joint itself.
